My "mystery" is Daniel B. Gifford, born in 1879 in Walworth Co., Wisconsin, son of Daniel T Gifford & Elnora Boyce Gifford. I have been able to find him in the census years up to and including 1900. After this he just "disappears".
His father died 16 Oct 1913 and according to obit, son Daniel B. is still living but it doesn't say where. His mother Elnora died 13 Apr 1916,"survived by son Daniel B."....., but doesn't include where Daniel is living. This is the last record I have for Daniel B., he seems to have just "disappeared". Hope someone out there possibly from a Gifford family ?, will see this posting and be able to help me solve the mystery of what happened to this Daniel B Gifford ? He is my children's paternal 2x gr grandfather.

Sandie,
I think I have a very good lead for you:
1930 Census: California / Santa Cruz Co. / Santa Cruz / E.D. 12 - P. 6A - Line 36
Address: 152 Cedar St. #A
GIFFORD, Dan B. - age 51 - Married - Occupation: Mechanic - Born in Wisconsin - Father born in New York - Mother born in Canada
**Although in this record it says he is married, his wife is not listed - he is apparently a tenant in this small building or household. He reports his that he was married at age 31, placing that marriage abt. 1910. That was around the time he "disappeared" in the census. His age of 51 places his birth abt. 1879 in Wisconsin.
I did not find him in the 1910 or 1920 census indexes, but knowing now that he might have been in California in 1930, that might be a good place to look.
In the 1900 census, his father is listed as born in New York, and although his mother was listed as born in Wisconsin, her parents were listed as born in Canada, so there is a Canadian connection.
All in all, this record seems to point to your missing Daniel Gifford.
Also a little extra note found: California Death Index: Dan Gifford died 29 Oct 1934 in Santa Cruz Co., age 54 - Certificate #57071 - Ordering his death certificate from Calif might help you piece together more of his life - http://www.co.santa-cruz.ca.us/rcd/recorders/birth&death/deathcertificates.htm
Best of luck in your continued research.

Hello Alan,
You may receive this reply twice, as when I went to preview my reply and then post it, I lost the page ? Anyway, thank you for your reply and info, I just came upon it tonight, almost 6 mths later! I don't recall ever getting an email notice, that a reply to my query had been posted. This evening, I just decided to enter Daniel's name in the Google search window, to see if Maybe there might be a new lead of sorts, but I wasn't holding my breath as he seems to have "disappeared". Well, on the first search page ,at the very bottom, was the name Daniel B Gifford, and at that point I held my breath and left clicked, lol. This link took me to your reply with the ever so helpful info you had found. I am now on my way to ancestry.com to check the census records, and tomorrow I will check into getting a copy of the death cert with the info you provided. I will let you know if this cert has the vital info to prove that this is the Daniel B. Gifford I have been searching for. I can't wait to share your info with my children, and let them know that with your help I was able to locate their lost paternal 2x gr grandfather, Daniel B Gifford.
Take care, and best of luck to you in your family history research also :)
